Dear Amtrak,

Recently I had the displeasure of flying. Sure, it seems like magic to cross the entire ocean in 8 hours, but it also seems like hubris. Defying gravity and hurtling through time and space is no way to go through life if you ask me. I vowed my next trip would be by train or tramp steamer. Unfortunately, there don’t really seem to be any of the latter still in service, so it looks like train it is!

As you can tell from my address I live in the middle of Iowa. I would like to visit Boston and maybe Quebec. I think getting on a train would be a damn fine way to see the world! So what I would like to know is do they still have private cars available? If I am going to do this I want a sleeper car with all the amenities like a bathroom and wireless internet. It would also be nice if meals were provided, but I figure if need be I can bring my own cook.

I’m looking into booking sometime this year, so if you could let me know if my plans are feasible that would be great. Otherwise I will probably end up flying again.

Sincerely,

Christopher L. Jorgensen
