Dear Matthew J. Hudson, Esq,

Recently, it has come to my attention that you have been challenged to a duel by one David Ostrom, aged 40, of Paola, Kansas. Although, I am nearly a decade his senior, I have decided that if you are unwilling, or unable, to stand for Iowa’s honor, as well as the honor of one Bridgette Ostrom, aged 38, of Harlan, Iowa, then as a healthy cornfed Iowan, I am willing to champion Bridgette in your stead. I do believe though, as the challenged party, it is well within our rights to be the ones who decide which weapons will be used, so to this end Mr. Ostrom will not require two weeks in order to “source or forge katana or wakizashi swords” as we will not be using those. I much prefer pistols at dawn.

One bullet each. Fifty paces. We’ll see which party “cries craven!” (It won’t be me!) We will do this like real Americans!

I know you will need to consult with your client, but if all concerned are agreeable to these conditions, you can tell that man that I will meet him, any time, any place, within a one hour drive of Des Moines. Tell that coward Ostrom to get his affairs in order! I will only need time to confer with my second, Marc John Randazza, and to arrange his travel to Iowa, but I suggest we move forward with this trial by combat as soon as possible and not waste any more of the court’s time.

Sincerely,

Christopher L. Jorgensen
