Dear NRA,

A little over 8 years ago Charlton Heston was quoted as saying “From my cold, dead hands!” when referring to gun rights laws. I know he’s dead now and all, so I was wondering has anyone done this yet? It would seem to me to be a great oversight if no one bothered to take him up on this declaration! After all, if we can’t give due respect to the dead, who can we respect?

Also, recently you have been taking Barack Hussein Obama to task for wanting gun bans. You do realize he is a black man running for President? You might not know this, but there are a lot of idiots with guns out there that don’t like black men or Presidents! I’m just lucky I am a white guy and not running for the Oval Office or I too would want a gun ban!

I’d really like to know your stance is on these issues.

Sincerely,

Christopher L. Jorgensen

Dear Mr. Jorgensen,

Thank you for your recent letter.  We are always happy to respond to members, firearm enthusiasts, and any other interested parties.

The right to keep and bear arms is derived from and inseparably linked to the right of self-defense. Thus, by nature it is an individually possessed right, as are all rights protected in our Constitution.

[Manifesto redacted. Read the scan if you care.]

The National Guard, established in 1903, is not the militia referred to in the Second Amendment.  For more than 400 years, the term “well regulated militia” has meant the people, with privately owned weapons, led by officers chosen by themselves.  Tench Coxe said that the militia “are in fact the effective part of the people at large.” Richard Henry Lee said that the militia “are in fact the people themselves.”  George Mason said that the militia consist “of the whole people.”

Thank you again for your letter.  Feel free to contact us at the above address, or at (800) 392-8683 if you have any more questions or comments.

Cordially,

Angus McClellan
