Dear Lyric Thermostat,
I want a top-of-the-line smart phone controlled internet connected thermostat. To be honest, I wanted a Nest, but then Google bought them and I don’t much trust Google. I especially don’t want them to know when I am home and needing to get warm!
Anyway, I was looking at the Lyric thermostat, but have a few questions I didn’t see answers to:
- What information gets transmitted to Honeywell? Sure, I trust you guys a bit more than Google, but what happens if you go out of business? Does my thermostat still work or am I just SOL?
- Does Honeywell sell a better thermostat than the Lyric? I want only the best, so if the Lyric isn’t the best what is?
- What’s to keep some miscreant from hacking into my thermostat and turning my heat up until my house turns into a sauna? Or reprogramming my thermostat to DDoS the RNC?
Or perhaps I should just get a Nest and not worry about what google finds out about me. After all, they already know my deepest secrets. What more could they find out with a thermostat?
Sincerely,
Christopher L. Jorgensen

So this is the first new letter in a while. I’m kinda excited. Look, the reply is lame, since I don’t see why they couldn’t just answer the questions, but I got a reply! Someone with more time on their hands should find out the answers to my questions for me.
I honestly don’t trust most things that talk to the internet. Mostly because I’ve been burned too many times.
